Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy results from deprivation of oxygen to the brain during or near birth. It is a permanent life long neurolgical disability that can have disastrous affects on the child, the mother and the whole family. It is characterized by uncoordinated muscular movement. Some cases of CP are congenital, however they can also be caused by physician mistakes during delivery. Some infants eventually progress to severe mental retardation brain injury and/or learning disabilities. Today in the US we have achieved reduced infant mortality rates but not lower incidents of cerebral palsy.

When Cerebral Palsy is diagnosed, it is often because the infant suffered asphyxia during the birthing process. A significant percent of all CP newborns had their umbilical cord wrapped around their neck, depriving them of oxygenand causing brain injury. It is very important therefore to immediately secure the hospital records for evidence of umbilical chord involvement.

Erb's Palsy is a nerve injury to the shoulder area. The nerves that control muscles in the shoulder or arm become damaged. These muscles may be paralyzed temporarily or permanently. Most of the time Erb's Palsy - or Brachial Plexus - occurs during the birth delivery process. Many infants with these injuries are large at birth. Erb's Palsy occurs in 1 out of every 500 births.
