Gastric Bypass surgery, often simply referred to as gastric bypass,
Bariatric or stomach stapling, is the surgical placing of a small
pouch in the stomach to restrict food consumption to less than before
surgery. More than 140,000 people had gastric bypass surgery in
2005. It can be a life saver for the extremely obese but it is not
without risks: estimate indicate as many as 1 in 300 die from the
surgery and many more suffer life long disabilities.
Mistakes most often made by surgeons include:
· Failure to note gastric fluid leaking
· Failure to recocnize signs of a pulmonary embolism
· Failure to treat post gastric bypass bleeding
· Failure to properly screen appropriate gastric bypass patients
Types of surgerical proccdures include: Open Roux en Y and or Laparoscopic
Roux-en-Y
and Distal Gastric Bypass.
