A distraught grandmother came to our office with a troubling story of how her 13 yr. old grandaughter had been raped by her therapist. Thus started a 15 month ordeal to get justice for this child/victim so she could begin to put the peices of her life together and start over. Shockingly, some of the therapists involved when questionned, believed that sex with a patient under some circumstances could be "beneficial" to the patient! It was against these disturbing notions that we fought an uphill legal battle and ultimately won for this victim of therapist sex abuse. Sexual abuse can take many forms and may even include over prescription of drugs. It might be done by a Doctor, a Psychiatrist, a Licensed Social Worker, a LICSW, a Psychotherapist or any one in the mental health or medical field. It can involve rape, assault or non physical injuries involving emotional distress or psychological damage. Perhaps the professional abused the "transference" phenomenon or proper patient client boundaries. Some transgressions are so pervasive they have resulted in suicide attempts or commitment and hospitalization. They may have broken accepted standards of treatment or behaviour.
